Want to learn something about building a website? There are lots of places that can help you learn the different aspects. Want to learn about coding, visit the recently resurrected Webmonkey. Want to learn about php visit Sitepoint. Want to learn how to make money on the web visit WebmasterWorld. Want to learn how to design a website that works you going to have to read a book. Sure you could read some of Jakob Nielsen’s books like Designing Web Usability, and Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed. You could even visit his website (useit.com) or purchase his newest book E-Commerce User Experience. These books are all good but a little to close to the stratosphere if you know what I mean. If you want to learn about how to design a website that works and more importantly learn why, then read Don’t Make me Think by Steve Krug. Don’t let the size of this book fool you it’s a paper back book less than 200 pages. You could probably read the whole thing in the time it takes to fly from New York to California, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did. You should read the book, 1 chapter at a time, think about it, make notes, write stuff down, go look at some websites, change your website. Read some more, and repeat. In fact I reread entire chapters of my book quite regularly.
Just to remind myself, I have a note over my monitor that reads DON’T MAKE ME THINK.
